Who knew last summer when my senior sessions were just kicking off that we would be living in a world of uncertainty? If someone said the whole country would be quarantined and that all schools would resort to online learning, I would have laughed it off and said it was impossible.
Well, here we are, the beginning of May 2020 and ‘my’ seniors last days of being in high school have been taken away.
They have been robbed of all the accolades that come with being a senior – no prom, no academic awards, no sports awards, no graduation with friends and family in attendance and no graduation parties.
I was a senior in high school many moons ago, and the feelings and emotions about that last month of school are still very vivid in my mind. I wish I could give these seniors the same type of memories that last forever.
You have watched the world change in the blink of an eye. Our daily sentences include ‘social distancing’, ‘sing happy birthday twice when washing your hands’, ‘pandemic’ (only thought that would happen in the movies), ‘stay at home order’, ‘make sure you have your mask’, ‘hoarding’, ‘shortages’, ‘Tiger King’, ‘healthcare heroes’, ‘new normal’, ‘unprecedented times’ and ‘you aren’t alone’.
You aren’t alone! At times, it may feel it, but know that there are so many people with you during this journey: your friends, parents, siblings, teachers, classmates to name a few and me!
Take one day at a time. Find joy in each day and be sure to celebrate all that you have accomplished.
Congratulations Class of 2020! You will overcome and soar!
